Steinbeck also portrays loneliness through characters. One important character is Curly’s wife. She says “I don’t know why I can’t talk to you”. Steinbeck has used this character to show the reader how isolated people could become in society. Even though she is married, the wife feels alone, and feels trapped by the men’s fear of her. Another character Steinbeck uses is..... QUOTATION Then explain it. Ranch – isolated – Q from L and G walking. This shows the reader/This makes the reader feel....
Steinbeck uses the setting of his novel to show the theme of loneliness. The bunkhouse is described as having “whitewashed” walls and “three small windows”. The image the reader would think of is more of a prison than a communal place to live....

Here are some quotations for Candy (his dog) about the theme loneliness.
"Candy looked about unhappily. 'No,' he said softly. 'No i couldn't do that. I had 'im too long." This is important because it shows that Candy is more reliant on the dog than the dog is on Candy. Keeping him alive is more benefitial to Candy as he is his companion.
"I had him since he was a pup" This is an important quotation as it would be a big step for Candy to let go as he hasn't had to experience being lonely since the dog was a puppy.
"I been around hin so much i never notice how he stinks." This is important as it shows how in society you become accepting of the way people are to avoid being lonely yourself. Or it could suggest that in society some people are isolated from communities because of how they look/behave.
"Candy looked a long time at Slim to try and find some reversal." This is important as it shows that although Candy knows that killing the dog is what is right he can't quite find the strength to actually be alone.
"I don't mind taking care of him" This is important as it shows that you will do anything to look after your loved ones not only for them but for yourself as you can't face up to the reality of what is coming (their death).
"That dog ain't no good to himself" This is important as although the dog may not be any good to himself he is a very important part of Candy's life that he can't/ doesn't want to do without.
"I wisht somebody'd shoot me if I got old an' a cripple" This is important as it shows the link between humans and animals. Just because we make the decisions for animals doesn't mean we should make them suffer just to put off us feeling lonely.

George and Lennie are two characters in the novel which do not show loneliness. " An' why? Because...because I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you, and that's why." This shows how luckey George and Lennie really are to have each other as most ranch men aren't this fortunate to have someone who cares about them. "we got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us." Again this shows how George and Lennie actually are privaledged compared to some of the other ranch workers as they have one another. Steinbeck shows that everyone needs a friend, without friends, people would suffer with loneliness and solitude. Crooks however, shows a strong sense of loneliness. "A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't matter no difference who the guy is, longs he with you." Crooks is a black man that experiences isolation because of the society in which he resides is racist.
