Below aer the answers we did in class. You can get hold of a copy of the exam sript by going to www.wjec.co.uk/index.php?subject=51&level=7&list=paper
and clicking the link for Paper 1 of Nov 2008 (Foundation). Other papers are also available, some of which we will use in class.
Remember, if you read the whole story through, you then have 10 mins per question. If you do each question as you read it through, you have 13 minutes. Be precise. Keep using the key words from the question.
A1: thoughts and feelings about the book. Margie and Tommy
Margie was feeling very excited as she “even wrote about it in her diary”. She feels thrilled about it as she “wrote excitedly”. The fact she underlines the word “real” emphasises this. Both Margie and Tommy thought the book was very precious and fragile as they “carefully turned the pages”. They also felt very surprised about the real book and thought it was “awfully funny to read words that stood still”. Tommy thought it was a “waste” because a “telescreen can hold a million” different BOOKS. Margie feels excited to see what the real book is about as she was “trying to read over” his shoulder.
A2: learn about Margie’s education, and why she hates the way she is taught.
Margie is educated by her “electronic teacher”. She hates it because she is given “test after test”. This lowers her self confidence because she had been doing “worse and worse”. The character shows her hatred as, when the county inspector comes to check the machine, she “hopes he wouldn’t know how to put it back together”. Margie shows her dislike for the “electronic teacher” BY USING WORDS SUCH AS “LARGE” “black” and “ugly” to describe it,. This explains her hatred of the robot. The part she hated most was the “slot where she had to put homework and test papers”. This explains her hatred for her electronic teacher as she dislikes “homework and test papers”. This is because she doesn’t do well in tests.
A3: Tommy behave Margie (How=PE)
Tommy behaves in a superior way towards Margie. He “looked at her with superior eyes”. He also calls her “stupid”. Tommy thinks Margie is inferior. He uses patronising expressions, speaking “smugly, pronouncing the words carefully, “centuries ago””. Tommy also behaves by “screaming with laughter” and saying “you don’t know much Margie” which also shows he thinks she is less intelligent. Tommy’s body language shows he is not enjoying her company as he “moved away from her”. He carries this on by replying “casually” as he “walked away, whistling”.
