Paper 1, Section A Revision (reading).
Answer questions methodically – go through the extract and mention each point as it appears.
For higher grades embed the quotes – the examiner has the extract so do not waste time copying out large chunks.
If it asks for your opinion, include it – “I think” “I feel” etc.
Try to include as many (relevant) points as possible.
If the question asks for the writer’s techniques write about them – don’t just list all the techniques they could have used, focus just on what they do use.
Teacher’s tips:
There will be a point in every 2-3 lines of the extract – look closely, do not skim and miss important points.
Draw lines on the extract to show where each question relates to – do not waste time making points from other areas as you will NOT get marks for this.
Manage your time well; spend 13 minutes (maximum) on each question.
Proof read, you will lose marks for inaccurate work. This is an important use of your time.
Paper 1, Section B1 Revision (writing).
You are marked on your accuracy and skill.
Spend a maximum of 20 minutes on the question.
Aim for 1 side of the exam booklet. It must be more than ½ a page to gain a C.
Start with the big picture and then zoom in to give detail. Aim for 5-6 paragraphs – think of each as being a camera snap shot.
Avoid phrases such as “everyone” as they are not accurate e.g “everyone was rushing around the shops”.
Paper 1 Section B2 Revision.
Again spend a maximum of 20 minutes on this question.
Focus on a simple plot with good characters (maximum of 4 characters who are developed and believable).
Avoid violence or swearing as it makes you seem immature.
Proof read – accuracy is key to good results.
Teacher’s tips:
40 minutes overall so aim for 2-3 sides.
Time management is key – do not miss B2 as you will lose a huge amount of marks.
Use the 3rd person to gain top marks.
This is a test of your ability to write descriptively, NOT tell a story.
Time to proof read is important as this exam is marked on your accuracy.
Paper 2, Section A Revision.
You are assessed on your use of language / accuracy of your work.
Read between the lines – do not just state the obvious facts.
Remember that Media texts aim to persuade, tempt and convince their readers.
Avoid general comments that link all newspapers / brochures etc as these comments are not true.
Again be methodical to avoid missing details.
A quick table / spider diagram will help your planning and consolidate ideas but do not waste a lot of your time on this as it will not be marked.
Look carefully at the wording of the question and focus on it – do not change the question to suit your answer.
Paper 2, Section B Revision.
Articles / letters / formal reports / leaflets / brochures / speeches any could be chosen as your type of writing.
Focus on the type of language you should be using – do not lose marks by being too formal/informal.
You can use the ideas / themes of section A but do not copy information from it.
The second section of this paper will be a new topic but you will be able to relate to it so do not panic.
Revise formal reports well as you may be unfamiliar with this genre.
Proof read carefully.
